In the Spotlight - BARBARA MCCOY OF POMS & ASSOCIATES INSURANCE BROKERS

We were fortunate to be able to command a few moments of Barbara’s time when we submitted our humble questionnaire to her in the midst of March Madness. Barbara is an avid college basketball fan and proudly roots on the UCLA Bruins no matter how their season might be going. Thank you Barbara for putting aside your bracket from the Big Dance for a couple of moments to share your life with us!

Barbara grew up on a small farm in New Jersey and moved to California during high school. She stayed on in California after graduation and began work in the construction industry. Barbara switched over to insurance more than thirty years ago and began multi-tasking between accounting, human resources and management functions.

About twenty-five years ago she worked with David Poms at another insurance brokerage firm. He decided to open up his own business in 1991. Barbara joined him seven years ago. Her current title at Poms & Associates is “Operations Manager” which encompasses managing the firm’s accounting department as well as sharing managing day-to-day operations.

Consistent with a career of multi-tasking, Barbara is the consummate multi-tasker in her personal life, having raised her children as a single parent and attended college at night. She jokes that she has “sampled” many of the colleges in the area including Valley, Pierce, and College of the Canyons. Her love of learning new things always brings her back to education.

As if managing an insurance firm, being a mom and going to school were not enough, Barbara maintains a passion for knitting and has even found time to teach several co-workers to knit and they enjoy knitting during lunch.

Barbara’s recipe to bring her busy family together is camping. She makes sure that her brood’s calendars are blocked for their annual family beachside camping trip. She describes heaven as laying in a hammock near the ocean with a good book.

Despite the fact that her office is located in Woodland Hills, Barbara McCoy is a regular attendee at our monthly EAC meetings and seminars. She says she comes both to get an easy refresher on HR basics and to learn new topics. And like so many EAC members tell us, Jonathan Fraser Light’s programs are “A MUST.” Thanks again Barbara!
